On a four-month term you get roughly sixteen weekends and you will spend the first one on whatever is not already sorted. That is the real argument for an all-inclusive furnished room, and it is worth being specific about which jobs disappear and which do not.
Already done before you arrive
- Furniture. Bed, desk with a task lamp, wardrobe, shelving. Kitchen equipped for the suite.
- Utilities. Hydro, heat, air conditioning and water are in the rent. No accounts, no deposits, no credit check for a service.
- Internet. A minimum 1 Gbps line already in the suite. No installation window to wait in.
- The lease. Digital, signed before you land if you want it that way.
You collect a key card at the desk and cook dinner the same night.
Still yours to do
Being straight about this is more useful than a list of everything included.
- A phone plan. Bring an unlocked handset.
- A bank account. Easier with the lease in hand, which is one practical argument for a lease over a short-stay booking.
- A TTC fare card. Buy it at the station.
- Bedding and towels. Bring them or buy them in the first day.
- Food. There are groceries within a short walk along Finch — see the neighbourhood page.
Getting to work in the first week
Line 6 Finch West runs from a stop about five minutes' walk away, west to Humber College and east to Finch West Station on Line 1. Do the trip once at the weekend before you do it on a Monday morning — it is the cheapest hour you will spend all term.
If your placement is downtown, allow fifty-five minutes to an hour each way and plan the week around it rather than being surprised by it.
Meeting the two people you live with
A suite holds three bedrooms. If you applied alone you were placed by schedule and sleeping hours, so the odds are reasonable that your hours and theirs are compatible.
Sort four things in the first week, while everyone is still being polite: quiet hours, kitchen cleaning, guests, and who needs the bathroom when. Bills are not on that list — they are in the rent, so there is nothing to split and nobody to chase.
